Pre-K student scores big in poster contest

A pre-Kindergarten student at Houston ISD’s Wainwright Elementary has been named a big winner in the annual Houston Fire Department Fire Prevention Poster Contest.
Jose Rivera’s poster entry took Second Place overall for students from Pre-K through 12th grade in the Houston area. The bilingual education student will receive $200, a ribbon, and a chance to ride in a fire truck during the annual Thanksgiving Day parade in Houston.

“Jose is really excited about riding on the fire truck," said Janice Raper, art teacher at Wainwright Elementary. “Not only is Jose creative and meticulous with his artistic endeavors, but he is also a fine academic student as well.

In preparing for the contest, all of the art students studied various methods of fire safety/fire prevention. In addition, literary selections about fire fighters, fire safety, fire fighting equipment, and general fire prevention were also shared in class.

Each student then made a list of fire prevention rules and chose the poster topic that he or she wished to illustrate from this list. Creating the fire prevention posters correlated the art lessons with language arts and social studies.
