An external camera took pictures of the Space Shuttle arriving at the International Space Station (ISS). The images of the ship docking in the clamp almost looked like they were standing still. When asked how he caught up to and docked with the ISS traveling at 17,500 MPH, the pilot of Shuttle Transport System (STS) Mission 114 Jim Kelly replied, “I close my eyes and I pray.”

For believers, praying to our heavenly Father is vital for our existence. One might compare prayer to being on a mission. However, in order for us to accomplish our mission, just like the Shuttle reaching a moving platform in the heavens, we also need to move at the speed of our heavenly goal. In order to ensure our prayers reach their goal, the Word of God gives some instructions.

Before reviewing the list below, understand that God understands we aren’t perfect. Lord Jesus told the disciples the pure in heart would see God. Sincere prayers prayed from a heart that desires to please God will be effective as we trust Him to work out our imperfections. These are simply things we can aim for. So, here are some pure things one may consider when going to God in prayer.

• As a person thinks in their heart, so are they (pure thoughts)
• Without holiness no one will see God (pure behavior)
• We have not because we ask not, or we ask amiss that we may consume it on our lusts (pure motives)
• Unless we become as little children, we will not see the kingdom of heaven (pure trust)
• If we bring a gift to the altar and have unforgiveness, go be reconciled and then present our gift (pure forgiveness)
• Seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness and all these things will be added to us (pure obedience)
• Love God and our neighbor as ourselves (pure love)

We are born into a world of strife and chaos. We are born again into a heavenly kingdom where our Father wants to supply all our needs according to his riches and glory. Just like there are civil laws which must be followed in this fallen world, there are heavenly rules that need to be adhered to if we are to succeed as a child of God. Hindered prayers aren’t because of what we’re exposed to in the world, it’s what we delight in that counts. Remember, as we delight ourselves in the Lord, He will give us the desires of our heart.

The Space Shuttle is no longer launched from Kennedy Space Center. Believers can launch their prayers heavenward at any time.

The ISS is the only man made object in the sky which can be seen from Earth. Go here to find out when it will be flying over your city.
