Pray For US has published an up-to-date list of Republican Senators who say they are going to fund Obamacare in the Continuing Resolution in September. Senators Rand Paul (R-KY), Ted Cruz (R-TX) and Mike Lee (R-UT) have launched an effort to de-fund Obamacare before it is fully implemented.
Their plan is a simple one: Fund everything in the budget except Obamacare. This will force the Democrats' hand on the issue. They would either have to accept the House-generated budget without Obamacare funds, or go through a short-term government shut-down to see which side blinks first.
Unfortunately for Senators Paul, Cruz and Lee, the Republican party is fractured over the issue of whether to stand with the American people and de-fund Obamacare. Eleven GOP Senators have openly opposed the plan to de-fund Obamacare.
Sen. Richard Burr (R-NC) says that the plan to eliminate Obamacare is, "The dumbest idea I've ever heard." Sen. Tom Coburn (R-OK) says it is a "failed strategy," in spite of the fact that the strategy has not actually been attempted yet. And Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) persuaded six supporters of the de-funding effort to change sides and vote to pay for Obamacare.
Unless the GOP unites and works together to support the de-funding effort, all that Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) has to do is sit back and laugh at them, and Obamacare will receive full funding. In addition to the eleven Senators opposed to the de-funding plan, Pray For US has also identified ten Republican Senators who have remained silent on the issue thus far.
Pray For US is encouraging Christians to contact the GOP Senators and urge them to support de-funding Obamacare. A majority of GOP Senators actually support the effort, with 25 in favor, 11 opposed and 10 "on the fence." At least 41 Senators would need to back the plan in order for it to pass the Senate.
