Okay so I'm not an objective voice on this, since I've performed at a couple of Poly Prides in years past and emceed this year. But, my role notwithstanding, I LOVE LOVE LOVE Poly Pride.
Here's my top five reasons:
1. Awesome company. The event has a real community feel. One woman brought cupcakes for the entire picnic because it was her birthday. Have you ever seen that at a public event? I don't even know that I've seen it since grade school.
2. As the LGBT community wanders towards assimiliation, I really value the work poly leaders are doing to make sure all families are recognized, no matter how they're configured.
3. Seeing other folks who are poly reminds me it is, in fact, something to be celebrated. So often it seems like a complication instead of a source of joy.
4. Entertaining entertainment. There was not one act that was ANYTHING like any other act. There was everything from an opera singer to a college acapella group to some kind of Ghanian xylophone trio.
(I did wonder how they got the Ghanian xylophones on the 1 train though).
5. Lived joy. I know, we're New Yorkers, we aren't supposed to be into joy. But it doesn't hurt, just for one afternoon, to dance around like the big nerds we are all secretly are. Seriously dude, frolicing never killed anyone.
