Research shows that one of the best language-learning strategies is to practice speaking the language. This winter 2014, intermediate-level, English speakers of other languages (ESOL) adults can attend a free English conversation group at selected branches of the New York Public Library (NYPL) and improve their conversation skills.
ESOL adults will have the chance to talk with “volunteers about current events, family life, holidays, New York City,” and other topics. The conversations groups offer ESOL adults fun, lively opportunities to put their learning into functional practice in natural settings.
The NYPL English Conversation Program is a partnership with New York Cares, “the city's largest volunteer management organization, running volunteer programs for 1,300 nonprofits, city agencies, and public schools.” New York Cares believes that everyone has “a role to play in making the city a better place.”
