Prabal Gurung Fall 2013 brings military inspired couture to NY Fashion Week (Photos)

Just when we thought Prabal Gurung excels in creating romantic and uber feminine style (see his collection for Target), he throws a curve ball and delivers a tough, edgy and a definitely more grittier collection than we have seen from him before.

Gurung says he was inspired by Ukraine's Asgarda tribe where women are trained in martial arts and empowered to fight against gender inequality. His Fall 2013 collection unequivocally manifests his inspiration of self-confident women. The military -like lines of wool coats, abstract lines in the gowns and very structured peplum waists of dresses are made for women who are assured of themselves and can carry a masculine color and construction with equal aplomb as they would a flowy frock.

The color palette of the collection was limited to military green, navy with a splash of crimson red and soft white. The shoes in the collection were given equal importance as the dresses, their steel heels and wide buckled straps complimenting the tenacious style of the collection.
