Safe to say that InterActiveCorp's (IAC) Communications Director, Justine Sacco, is not going to have a fun phone conversation after she lands in South Africa later tomorrow, following a tweet from her account earlier today, Friday, December 20, that read: "Going to Africa. Hope I don't get AIDS. Just kidding. I'm white."
The offensive tweet caused a firestorm on Twitter, as social media users demanded for her to be immediately fired from her position at IAC; an internet holding company that owns such domains as match.com and blackpeoplemeet.com.
In response to the backlash, IAC CEO, Barry Diller, issued a statement earlier:
"This is an outrageous, offensive comment that does not reflect the views and values of IAC," Diller told The Hollywood Reporter.
IAC stated they planned to reprimand Sacco, the only problem is that she is currently on an International flight to South Africa from London, and apparently, has no idea how much of a stir her tweet has caused.
"Unfortunately, the employee in question is unreachable on an international flight, but this is a very serious matter, and we are taking appropriate action," said Diller.
The wait for Sacco's landing, and ultimate professional fate, has spawned the hashtag #HasJustineLandedYet, which is currently trending worldwide on Twitter. Twitter users have even gone so far as to post links on how to follow Sacco's flight from London to Cape Town.
The tweet is not the first offensive one sent out from Sacco's account on her International expedition. Earlier yesterday, Sacco tweeted out a reference to Londoner's bad teeth stereotypes while announcing she had landed in the UK. She also tweeted an "inner monologue" about how bad she wanted to tell a "weird German dude" to wear deodorant.
In case you are wondering, Sacco is scheduled to land around 7:00 AM, South Africa time. But no matter how smoothly the flight went, it appears she is in for some turbulence upon landing.
