Justine Sacco was a PR director en route to Africa when she sent an insensitive and racist tweet that went viral while she was still flying high above the clouds on her flight, blissfully unaware of the furor that she had started. Days later, she was fired by Barry Diller's IAC, her employer, a company that comprises Match.com and OkCupid among others.
According to a Dec. 21, 2013 update by the Los Angeles Times, Justine Sacco was fired for posting the following message online:
"Going to Africa. Hope I don’t get AIDS. Just kidding. I’m white!"
While PR director Justine Sacco was on an airplane bound from London to Africa, her racist tweet was circulated and recirculated among her Twitter followers. It quickly spread until it made the national news.
The racist tweet was later deleted. It was quickly followed by the deletion of the PR director's entire Twitter account.
Her employer, IAC, was prompted to issue a statement regarding PR director Justine Sacco's racist tweet. The company called it, "…outrageous, offensive comment that does not reflect the views and values of IAC." However, a search of their website reveals no news of Justine Sacco, her racist tweet, or her subsequent firing.
