Robert "Bob" Menendez, the senior Senator from New Jersey and Chairman of the Committee on Foreign Relations, has called for arming Ukraine's government in their war against Russia and pro-Russian separatists.
"We should provide the Ukrainians with the type of defensive weapons that will impose a cost upon Putin for further aggression," the Democrat said. "There are those in Europe and elsewhere who say we don't want to provoke Putin. Putin doesn't need provocation. In this case, weakness is a greater provocation for Putin to strike."
Menendez made his comments from Ukraine, where he is currently on a fact-finding mission.
President Obama had previously stated that the situation in Ukraine would not be solved through military force. Menendez believes that circumstances have changed.
The Senator spoke of helping Ukraine send "[Russia's] sons and daughters back in body bags to Russia."
If this comes to pass, and the United States begins openly arming the government of Ukraine with weapons that will be used to kill large numbers of Russian troops, then it appears safe to say that the Cold War will have restarted.
