A powerful 8.2 earthquake has struck Chile, confirms the US Geological Survey (USGS). The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center issued a Tsunami Warning for Chile, Peru and Ecuador. A Tsunami Watch has been issued for Columbia, Panama, Costa Rica, Nicaragua, and El Salvador. The Center has also issued an “information statement” for Hawaii.
The quake occurred near the coast of Northern Chile Tuesday night. The epicenter was nearly 60 miles northwest of Iquique, according to the USGS. Sea level readings, according to the Center, have indicated that in fact a tsunami was generated.
Chile and the surrounding area has been experiencing tremors and minor quakes for the past two weeks with some consistency. The Associated Press is reported that this latest and biggest quake shook buildings in Bolivia and Peru. Waves over six feet tall have already been reported.
Miraculously there have not yet been any reports of severe injuries or fatalities.
