The Powerball winning numbers results for the Sept. 18, 2013 jackpot are worth a staggering amount, as ticket sales are beginning to pick up once again. The latest grand prize jackpot has now reached an estimated $400 million cash prize, before taxes. The winning numbers will be shown during the TV drawing, with Roanoke's WDBJ 7 among the stations to watch Wednesday night to see them drawn.
Update 9/18: Winning numbers are 7-10-22-32-35 and Powerball 19
A Fox News report on Sept. 18 indicates that this is the fifth-largest jackpot ever for Powerball at $400 million. The jackpot reached as high as $590 million earlier this year, and it's believed that changes in the lottery game were responsible for the higher grand prizes hitting. Basically, the odds of winning the jackpot were made tougher, but the odds of winning somewhat respectable payout amounts were increased. In addition, ticket prices were changed.
The Mega Millions lottery may follow suit with similar changes, with the exception of increased ticket prices. There is currently an option with Mega Millions to spend an extra dollar when buying a ticket to boost the potential payout, which may be increased. The amounts the jackpots increase between drawings where there are no grand prize winners may also increase. Mega Millions holds the record currently for highest jackpot ever in the history of United States' lotteries, when it hit $656 million back in March 2012.
Paula Otta, executive director for the Virginia Lottery, and lead director for Mega Millions said of the changes being made:
"Certainly we were looking at the fact that changes that Powerball made, primarily by increasing the price point, it definitely favorably impacted the jackpot. It's doing what it's supposed to do, which is helping Powerball have bigger jackpots on a pretty consistent basis."
The previous Powerball drawing, held on Saturday, Sept. 14 had no grand prize winners, resulting in the jackpot to grow to $400 million tonight. The estimated cash prize for matching all five white ball numbers and the red Powerball number is $223.6 million. There's also an annuity installment payment option that a grand prize winner can choose, rather than the lump sum.
Wednesday's Powerball drawing will be televised on CBS affiliate WDBJ 7 in Roanoke. The drawings are shown twice weekly, with the other drawing held on this coming Saturday evening. The pre-recorded winning numbers drawings are shown during WDBJ 7's first commercial break of the 11 p.m. evening newscast. See more info about the lottery and different cash prizes at Powerball.com.
