Powerball ticket price increases to $2: Powerball December 31 lottery results

The price of a Powerball lottery ticket is going up. If you hope to win the jackpot prize, you will have to pay $2 for a ticket starting on January 15, 2012. Lottery officials state that the increase in the price of the Powerball tickets from $1 to $2 each is to make the jackpot bigger. They hope it will differentiate Powerball from the nationwide Mega Millions game. 

In case you haven't checked you Powerball ticket for December 31, 2011, the winning numbers in the December 31 New Year's Eve drawing were 5, 23, 25, 28, 40 and the Power Ball was 34. The Powerplay was x4. There was no jackpot winner, but 6 lucky players matched the first 5 numbers for a $200,000 prize: 1 from Arizona, 1 from Florida, 1 from Georgia (with Power Play), 1 from Nebraska, 1 from Pennsylvania, and 1 from South Carolina. The current jackpot is $30 million and the next drawing is Wednesday, January 4, 2012.

Both the Powerball and the Mega Millions lottery games are played in 42 states with drawings twice a week. Powerball winning numbers are drawn every Wednesday and Saturday night at 10:59 p.m. ET. Mega Millions numbers are drawn every Tuesday and Friday at 11pm ET.
