On a bright, sunny morning in November, various groups fighting the battle against cancer assembled in Lawyers Mall in Annapolis MD. Some advocates were local to Anne Arundel County; some came from around the State. Many traveled from Baltimore City and Baltimore County. All came for just one purpose! ASK the Governor to include funding in the State's 2011 budget to fund cancer programs -- especially funding for the breast and cervical cancer screening and tobacco use control programs.
Advocates brought their plea for funding, their enthusiasm for the cause, and a pile of purses to represent the fact that the Governor and the Maryland General Assembly have the Power of the Purse... or more specifically the purse strings, a.k.a. the funding, the budget!
Representatives from each of the groups listed below spoke, advocating to reduce cancer incidence in Maryland.
In attendance were members, friends and advocates for:
American Cancer Society
American Cancer Society - Cancer Action Network
American Heart Association
American Lung Association
Campaign for Tobacco-free kids
Health Care for All
Leukemia and Lymphoma Society
Maryland Skin Cancer Prevention Program
MDGASP
Smoke Free MD
The Ulman Fund
Tobacco Free Baltimore County Community Coalition
Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc.
