Potomac Heritage Trail

The Potomac Heritage Trail is a National Scenic Trail officially established in 1983, which links numerous trails and historic sites in the Washington area, as well as western Maryland and Pennsylvania.

The C&O Canal Towpath and the Mount Vernon Trail both form parts of the PHT’s route. Pennsylvania’s Laurel Highlands Hiking Trail- which extends into the suburbs ofPittsburgh- makes up another section.

Via the C&O Canal Towpath, the PHT intersects with the Appalachian Trail near Harpers Ferry, and shares part of its route with the American Discovery Trail.

Work still continues on extending the PHT into Prince William County, with connections to Prince William Forest Park and Leesylvania State Park.

The PHT extends into Stafford County via the Government Island Trail, and the Northern Neck through the Northern Neck Heritage Trail Bicycling Route Network.
