Wright County Egg of Galt, Iowa is voluntarily recalling eggs that may be contaminated with Salmonella, an organism that can potentially cause serious or fatal infections primarily in the young and old as well as people with weakened immune systems. Healthy people infected with Salmonella typically experience fever, nausea, diarrhea, vomiting or abdominal pain. Salmonella infections rarely can result in more severe illnesses such as arterial infections, endocarditis or arthritis if the infection enters the blood stream.

The recalled eggs were distributed to food wholesalers, distribution centers and foodservice companies in eight states: California, Illinois, Missouri, Colorado, Nebraska, Minnesota, Wisconsin and Iowa. These companies distribute their products across the nation. There are confirmed Salmonella enteritidis cases relating to the specified eggs. Details as to how many illnesses have been reported or how many states have been affected have not been provided. According to the CDC, traceback investigations include sampling and records reviews of Wright County Egg are ongoing.

Eggs subject to the recall were distributed nationally and were packaged under 13 different brand names: Lucerne, Albertson, Mountain Dairy, Ralph’s, Boomsma’s, Sunshine, Hillandale, Trafficanda, Farm Fresh, Shoreland, Lund, Dutch Farms and Kemps. Affected carton sizes include: 6-egg cartons, dozen egg cartons and 18-egg cartons stamped with plant numbers P1026, P1413 and P1946 followed by Julian dates between 136 and 225. The affected products should be returned to the store of purchase for a full refund.

The Minnesota Department of Health (MDH) has linked seven illnesses to the multistate egg recall to date. Dr Kirk Smith, foodborne illness supervisor with the MDH, estimates that for every confirmed case, there are 38 additional unconfirmed cases.

Visit the Egg Safety Center for additional information concerning this recall, or contact the Egg Safety Media Hotline at (404) 367-2761.
