With the Champion's League well underway, the group stages have concluded. For the most part the results were as expected, though some teams such as Borussia Dortmund have been in impressive form so far. Now that the tournament is entering the round of 16 however, the potential for upsets appears as if it could be much higher and bets may not be as safe as many people imagine.
The most exciting game should be Manchester City coming up against Barcelona. While City are certainly the underdogs in the match-up the Betfair odds should eventually show that it isn't by a huge margin. Similarly the Arsenal v. Bayern Munich game should be rather close.
One of the potential upsets may come in the form of Galatasaray v. Chelsea, where the Turkish team has done well throughout the group stages and even managed to qualify ahead of Juventus and snatching a draw at Juventus' home ground according to the ESPN FC match report. Make no mistake, the big teams of the tournament are still heavily favored to make it through – but some of the smaller teams such as Olympiakos, Schalke and so on may pull a few surprises out of their hats.
If you're looking to bet on individual matches in the round of 16 when it resumes in February, it will be worth keeping an eye on the form of the teams involved during the holiday season. While many of Europe's leagues may take off for the winter, the English Premier League certainly doesn't so Manchester United, Manchester City, Chelsea and Arsenal should all be in action.
By keeping track of how they're performing, you may be able to decide whether or not you want to risk a potential upset or even capitalize on it.
