Universal Pictures has finally released poster and promotional artwork for the upcoming Keanu Reeves samurai epic "47 Ronin" based on the legendary story about 18th century Japan, in which 47 Samurai warriors, having seen their master slain (marking them as dishonored “Ronin”), embark on a mission of revenge as their last act.
Reeves plays the lead character Kai, an outcast who joins with the Ronin on their mission.
The supporting cast includes Japanese actors Hiroyuki Sanada (best known for his roles in the original "Ringu," "The Last Samurai" and Danny Boyle’s sci-fi epic "Sunshine"); Tadanobu Asano (Kakihara from director Takashi Miike’s twisted film "Ichi the Killer" and Genghis Khan in "Mongol," as well as Hogun in Marvel's "Thor"); Rinko Kikuchi (Oscar nominated actress in "Babel," and the silent con artist in "The Brothers Bloom"); Kou Shibasaki ("Battle Royale" and most recently "The Lady Shogun and Her Men").
The film was originally scheduled to be released last Nov. 21, 2012, but studio conflicts with director Carl Rinsch, along with trouble with the extensive 3-D visual effects, and changes to the storyline, led to additional reshoots with Keanu Reeves, as well as Rinsch's removal from the post-production editing of the film.
Universal has since pushed the release date from Feb. 8, 2013 to Christmas 2013, most likely so the studio can work on the film's 3-D visual effects, complete the additional edits to the storyline and promote the film at Comic-Con this summer.
