Post-it Note helps grow good kids!

It isn’t often that a big-time company partners up with a small-town school to make things happen, but that was exactly the case when Post-it Note, a 3M company, joined forces with the Tahquamenon Area Schools in Newberry, Michigan. Post-it Note donated 30 sets of heart-shaped pop-up dispensers for a school-wide challenge to complete acts of kindness. The Counseling and Medical Place (CAMP), a school-based health center located inside of the school, organized and arranged the program.

Over the course of one week, students were recognized by staff and other students, if they completed an act of kindness. Their name was put into a drawing to win one of the dispensers. The dispensers, which are so impressive in person, were equally distributed amongst the elementary, middle and high schools in the K-12 building.

This program was initiated to recognize and acknowledge students who demonstrated compassion, kindness and service towards others. The CAMP and Tahquamenon Area Schools encourage these characteristics at all times, but Post-it Note gave them the opportunity to recognize these students in a more public way.

Students who were recipients of the Post-it Note heart-shaped pop-up dispensers did such things as helped staff carry bags to the science wing without being asked, offered a ride home to somebody else, opened doors for others, provided kind words of encouragement, and more. The concept behind this program was simple, but the character it encouraged will last a lifetime.

Students were awarded in a public way. Elementary and high school students were called to receive their awards via the school’s intercom system, while the middle school students received their dispensers with much fanfare from Mr. Bryan DeAugustine, TAS middle and high school principal, in the cafeteria during their lunch hour.

According to Mr. D, as he is affectionately known by students, "It has been really great to see our students helping each other simply for the sake of being kind. It's too easy these days to do nothing at all, much less something nice. We're lucky here in Newberry; we have some really great kids who look out for each other. Our CAMP staff had an opportunity to thank those kids with a small gift, so it's nice to see them get some recognition."

The staff of Tahquamenon Area Schools in Newberry is grateful to Post-it Note, for their generosity towards and support of young people, particularly in regards to character building. Their heart-shaped pop-up dispensers were the perfect complement to this program.
