Cahill’s, a longstanding neighborhood bar just near the nighttime bustle of Washington Avenue, closed earlier this month. Though a low-key unpretentious bar first and foremost, it had a very good kitchen, which served up one of my favorite burgers in the city.
Though nearly all bars seem to have kitchens these days, much of the food is forgettable, if enjoyable after a pitcher or two. But, even post-Cahill’s, there are more than a few places that do double duty as bars and commendable eateries.
Below is a list of bars or pubs with good grub. The wing joints are excepted; these draw just for the wings or the games.
Christian’s– Hamburgers –2000 Bagby (near Gray), 77002, (713) 527-0261, 2820 White Oak (east of Studemont), 77007, (713) 863-1207, and 7340 Washington (at I-10), 77007, (713) 864-9744 – Not a pub, but some folks visit for the ice house or sports bar aspect of these in addition to the burgers.
El Gran Malo– Mexican –2307 Ella (between TC Jester and 610), 77008, (832) 767-3405 – A bar rather than a pub, but a fun stop with some interesting beers, and more interesting cocktails.
Kenneally’s – Pizza –2119 S. Shepherd (between San Felipe and Fairview), (713) 630-0486
Market Square Bar & Grill – Hamburgers –311 Travis (between Preston and Congress), 77002, (713) 224-6133
McGonigel’s Mucky Duck – British –2425 Norfolk (east of Kirby), 77098, (713) 528-5999
Petrol Station – Hamburgers - 985 Wakefield, 77018, (713) 957-2875
The Red Lion – British –2316 S. Shepherd (between San Felipe and Fairview), 77019, (713) 782-3030
Rudyards – Hamburgers – 2010 Waugh (between Fairview and West Gray), 77006, (713) 521-0521
More restaurants than bars – and you are likely to visit for the food rather than for drinking – but these provides a pub-like atmosphere if you are planning solely to imbibe, too.
BRC Gastropub – American – 519 Shepherd (between Feagan and Washington), 77007, (713) 861-2233
The Queen Vic – Indian / British – 2710 Richmond (west of Kirby), 77098, (713) 533-0022
