As Americans remember the eighth anniversary of September 11, 2001 there comes news that one of NASCAR’s biggest tracks was the sight of a possible terrorist incident in July of 2008.
According to published reports an incident at Daytona International Speedway in July of 2008 involved four men who it turned out are on a US government terrorist watch list.
Officials from several Central Florida law enforcement agencies and the FBI, Florida Department of Law Enforcement and Florida Highway Patrol are keeping details of the incident under wraps saying there remains as an open investigation and won’t reveal any details. One official I spoke to however did confirm that during the race week in July as Daytona prepared for the Coke Zero 400, four men were seen taking photos of the Speedway.
Officers from the Florida Highway Patrol saw the four men taking pictures of the Speedway and while that type of activity isn’t suspicious in and of itself, the men were taking the photos as they drove by the track raising an alert in the officer’s minds.
The vehicle was pulled over a short distance from the Speedway and when questioned the men denied taking pictures. The men were released but the law enforcement source did confirm that the memory card from the camera the men had contained pictures of the Speedway and even more disturbing was the fact that the men’s names came up on a terrorist watch list.
Although the investigation continues, there is no word if the men have been taken into custody since their names were matched up to the list.
The source said the men never appeared to have set foot on Speedway property.
