Possible new high school charter school

I had a great time at the CHN conference a few weeks ago where I spoke on Time Management for Busy Homeschoolers as well as Homeschool Co-ops.

Another benefit of attending these conferences is that you meet vendors in the vendor hall and that is just what I did. One of the vendors that I met was Carrie from Open High School of California.  In talking with her, I got really excited about a new proposed charter school for high school students that sounded like something my high schoolers might actually enjoy since it is heavily technology based.  My opinion was that this is the way it will be done in the future and they are one of the first to do it.  I wanted to know what made them different from all the rest and here is the info I received:

"- An innovative teaching model that can be best described as one-on-one tutoring for every student in every subject.

- Strategic use of technology which enables enriched student teacher interaction through webinars, emails, message boards, video conferencing, phone contact, and more.

- Instead of books and pencils, all students will be issued a laptop computer for school use at no charge.

- Open educational resources allow for the most flexible individualized education for students.

- Completely web-based curriculum offers students the ability to work anywhere anytime.

- Service Learning builds important social and organizational skills."

They will serve students in Los Angeles and surrounding counties.

The fact that they will have webinars and interaction with other students through services like Skype made me think that it will also help with the whole socialization issue in high school, plus they'll get a classroom type of experience.

They are built on the model of Open High School of Utah, which apparently has been highly successful.

They are currently looking for families to sign their charter petition to show interest from the community, which doesn't result in you being obligated to join it.  It is basically just a vote for more options.  Here is the link if you would like to do that: http://ohsca.us2.list-manage1.com/subscribe?u=a424bb0069432c4bffc1cc05f&id=a0ec6aee3c
