A 2 year old girl is dead following a dog attack that took place in a Chicago south-side neighborhood this weekend. Jah’niyah White of the 1700 block of East 67th Street was treated at Jackson Park Hospital where she died following serious injuries sustained in the dog attack reported Chicago Sun Times on December 8, 2013.
At the time of the dog attack, Jah’niyah White was being cared for by her maternal grandfather on the 3300 block of East 91st Street, but it is reported that he had left the young child unattended.
Over 2 million of the estimated 4.7 million dog bites annually are inflicted on small children. (The elderly and letter carriers, are the next most frequent victims of dog attacks.) And, a recent report from the United States Post Office notes that, "dog attacks are the most commonly reported childhood public health problem in the United States." In fact according to DogsBite.org, a whopping 79% of the children killed by dogs last year were all under two years old.
The Illinois Department of Children and Family Services is currently investigating allegations of abuse and neglect related or contributing to Jah’niyah White's death. The girl's death was in fact ruled a homicide according to NBC Chicago, "An autopsy Sunday revealed that White died from multiple injuries sustained in a dog attack and that neglect was a contributing factor in her death, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office." As of Sunday, charges have not been filed, and the investigation is scheduled to continue.
