Portland is full of spooky places, but until Travelocity released it's top five list of ghastly places to visit on Halloween, nobody knew that Portland was that spooky. On Oct. 31 Huffington Post reports that Portland is rated number four of ghastly places to visit largely due to the shanghai tunnels in Old Town.
The underground passageways in the downtown area are considered to be very haunted. When Portland was first built, the passageways were used by loggers, sailors and others looking for work. Many men were "shanghaied" or kidnapped and sold into slavery to ship captains. Later, it was used for human trafficking, and now, the tunnels are simply, a popular haunt to visit and explore. In this daring planet, being named one of the top 5 spookiest places to visit is not only an honor, but somewhat unnerving to know that such crazy things have happened in the city of roses.
If you plan to visit this haunted city, the most recommended place to stay is the Benson Hotel. There have been a handful of spectral sightings, including that of the owner, Simon Benson.
