For the first time, Literary Arts' Oregon Book Awards will recognize achievement in the field of comics, and Portland artists have taken over the category.
The 25th annual ceremony introduces the Pacific Northwest College of Art Graphic Literature Award. An out-of-state judge has chosen five finalists from the year's submissions, and all are Portland creators:
- Graham Annable for The Book of Grickle (Dark Horse Comics)
- Aidan Koch for The Whale (Gaze Books)
- Sarah Oleksyk for Ivy (Oni Press)
- Greg Rucka for Stumptown (Oni Press)
- Joe Sacco for Footnotes in Gaza (Metropolitan Books)
The public may also cast their vote for their favorite book in the Readers' Choice Award survey on the Oregonian's website.
In addition to Graphic Literature, the winners of the awards for fiction, nonfiction, poetry and other categories will be announced at the ceremony on Monday, April 23rd at the Gerding Theater at the Armory. Hosting will be Timothy Egan, the Pulitzer Prize-winning Pacific Northwest correspondent for the New York Times. Tickets are available at BrownPaperTickets.com.
