Portland Sea Dogs are setting records -- the good kind

The 2014 season is at a close, but this year's Sea Dogs have left a legacy for future teams to strive to beat.

  • Pitcher of the Year plus -- Henry Owens was not only named the 2014 Eastern League pitcher of the year, he set the Sea Dogs franchise records for most wins (14) in a season, the most consecutive scoreless innings (27.2), and ERA of 2.44 beating out Jon Lester (2.61).
  • Most wins in franchise history -- The Sea Dogs won 88 games this year.
  • Eastern League Manager of the Year -- Billy McMillon.
  • Fourteen sellouts is pretty good considering that a large percentage of games were played during persistently bad weather -- rain, snow, sleet, lightening ice, tornados. The record is 48 sellouts, but there were fewer seats than this year.

Of course, last but not least (and maybe the most important record yet) Mike Brenly, Sea Dogs catcher, is batting 1,000 from the left side. In his last at bat on September 1, 2014, the right-handed catcher batted from the left side for the first time in his professional career and hit a liner down the left field line for a double. Looks like the Sea Dogs also have the newest switch hitter in the league.
