Portland's Hotel Monaco unveils hypo-allergenic rooms

Hotel Monaco Portland announced April 5, 2011 that it has dedicated an entire floor to serving guests with allergies and asthma.  In unveiling 25 hypo-allergenic rooms, general manager Craig Thompson stated, “We really want to accommodate those travelers seeking a cleaner and healthier environment."

Each of the hypo-allergenic rooms feature:

  •     Guaranteed smoke and pet-free rooms
  •     Down pillows and comforters that have been replaced with synthetic hypo-allergenic versions
  •     Mini-bars stocked with wheat and gluten free offerings
  •     Vacuums equipt with special HEPA filters to trap pollen and dust mites
  •     Hypoallergenic and fragrance-free soaps, lotions and shampoos available by request
  •     Fragrance-free and chemical-free cleaning products approved by Green Seal, a nonprofit environmental certification program

Although Hotel Monaco Portland will remain a pet-friendly property, the hypo-allergenic floor will be completely pet free. A four star boutique hotel, owned by the San Francisco-based Kimpton Hotels & Restaurants, the Monaco reportedly incorporates more than 100 eco-friendly practices into their daily operations, including in-room recycling bins, low-flow faucets, toilets and showers, converting certain products to Fiberstone's tree-free, natural paper alternative, packaging soap and shampoo in recyclable containers and donating unused portions to charity, and switching to printer ink with a 70/80 ratio of bio-renewable content (higher than soy).

The Monaco's environmentally-friendly practices have won it several honors including Green Seal Silver Certification, The City of Portland's 'RecycleWorks' award and being named the Best Green Company to work for in 2010 by the Oregon Business Magazine.The hotel has also consistently been listed in the ‘Top 500 Best Hotels in the World’ by Travel + Leisure, and on the Conde Nast Traveler’s Gold List.

Kimpton Hotels & Restaurants, a collection of boutique hotels and chef-driven restaurants, has been recognized as a environmental leader in the hospitality industry for its EarthCare program, using eco-friendly products, and partnering with The Nature Conservancy and The Trust for Public Land
