Early Sunday morning, Pedro Santiago Machi-Menchu of Vancouver broke into a home on North Nashton Street just before 1 a.m., FOX 12 reported, through an open bedroom window. He then tried to sexually assault a 6-year-old girl.
Kyler Pulfrey, 21, lives at the home Machi-Menchu broke into and went to check on the three children staying there. He found Machi-Menchu on top of the girl trying to sexually attack her.
Pulfrey pulled the man off of the girl and they struggled until the fight entered the living room.
Another person staying in the home dialed 911 while Pulfrey held the man there.
Officers arrived at the home and arrested Machi-Menchu on charges of first degree burglary and first degree attempted sex abuse.
Machi-Menchu was treated for his injuries and send directly to jail.
The girl does not live at the home, but is the goddaughter to someone who lives there.
Her information has not been released.
As much fear as this has placed in the hearts of parents everywhere, Portland Police say this type of stranger-to-stranger assault is very rare. Authorities urge families not to leave windows open, or to put a pressure alarm in the window..
