Coverage of what's happening in film around Portland for your weekend ahead.
- Daniel Radcliffe's new film, "The Woman in Black," opens in theaters nationwide today, and it marks the first time that audiences will see Radcliffe on the big screen not as Harry Potter, since the franchise wrapped up. "The Woman in Black" is a horror film based on the Susan Hill novel of the same name. Radcliffe plays Arthur Kipps, a lawyer who is grieving the loss of his wife and trying to take care of his young son, when he discovers a vengeful ghost inhabiting the house of his client.
- The Cascade Festival of African Films, an annual event founded in 1991 by four members of the Portland Community College faculty, invites you to come out tonight at 7 pm to celebrate its opening night at The Hollywood Theatre. The event is free, and a film by one of Egypt's most important directors, Yousry Nasrallah, called “Scheherazade, Tell Me a Story,” will be showing in Arabic with English subtitles. -The Hollywood Theatre is located at NE 41st and NE Sandy (4122 NE Sandy Blvd)
- The third annual Beer and Movie Festival (BAM fest) kicks off tonight at the Academy Theater, and six awesome films- "Conan the Barbarian," "Raiders of the Lost Ark," "2001: A Space Odyssey," "Star Trek 2: The Wrath of Khan," "The Untouchables," and "Boogie Nights"- will be screening in the increasingly rare 35mm format, every night until Feb.9th -The Academy Theater is located at 7818 SE Stark St., $4 admission
- The Rural Route Film Festival runs tonight through Sunday at 5th Avenue Cinema, and features films that center around rural people and places. "Summer Pasture" plays tonight at 7 pm, "Truck Farm" at 9:30 pm tomorrow, and "Driftless, Land of the Pure" on Sunday at 3 pm. A program of short films will also be screened at 9:30 pm tonight, and 7 pm tomorrow night. - 5th Avenue Cinema is located at 510 SW Hall. $3 general admission, FREE for PSU students. Free popcorn for everyone.
