Wife of Ellen DeGeneres, actress Portia di Rossi shared how she truly felt about coming out as a lesbian woman in Hollywood earlier this weekend.
Reports from The Huffington post dated Nov. 1 explain how di Rossi was fearful of what others would think of her; she didn’t want to be “strange”.
Now married to talk show host Ellen DeGeneres since 2008, Portia di Rossi is more confident about hers sexuality and the impact she can make as an openly gay woman in the entertainment business.
She confides in an interview: "I just didn't want to be a lesbian.”
The Australian actress continues: "I'd never met one for a start and I just thought they were strange and that they hated men and they were very serious and I had these ridiculous images in my head and there were no out celebrities or politicians or anybody that I could look to and go, 'Oh, I could be like that.' There was nobody that I could say, 'I could date her and I want to be like her'..."
She adds: “I just kind of thought I don't want to live like this. I don't have to, I don't need to, I just shut down the emotional life.''
Di Rossi is not alone in this mindset. Her own wife Ellen also had a tough go when she decided to come out. DeGeneres struggled for years with the notion of coming out. When she finally did, her news was met with mixed reactions.
So mixed, that her career actually seemed to briefly flat line while she worked ever more determined to rise to stardom with her wit and savvy business sense.
Today, both Ellen and Portia are happily married. Together, they represent strong business women who have taken charge in their business endeavors, even when things became challenging for them.
