Portia de Rossi rehab: Booze and pills to escape life with Ellen DeGeneres?

Portia de Rossi rehab news headlines this week are shaking up the public image of a happy marriage between Portia de Rossi and Ellen DeGeneres. Reports that Portia de Rossi spent 30 days in rehab in May for alleged substance abuse originated from In Touch, reports Yahoo! Shine on July 3. “In Touch has exclusively learned that Ellen DeGeneres’ wife, Portia de Rossi, secretly checked into rehab in early May.”

While Ellen DeGeneres has been private and silent about Portia's rehab, CelebDirtyLaundry reports that “according to the July 14th print edition of InTouch, Portia’s home life has been unbearable and she was using booze and pills to escape life underneath Ellen’s thumb.”

According to the report, the marriage of Ellen and Portia is “on shaky grounds at best” and is a “closely guarded closet.” Allegedly, Portia’s home life had become unbearable because Ellen is the dominant partner in the relationship who prevents Portia from living a fulfilled life, pursuing her dreams – and having a child. “Pill popping seems to be a new thing for Portia and her need to escape her own reality reached new heights when Ellen refused to have a child with her.”

Reportedly, Ellen works nonstop while Portia is left alone at home. Whatever projects Portia does want to get involved in, Ellen controls. While Ellen DeGeneres lives in the company of fans and celebrities, Portia allegedly lives in the company of booze and pills.

Rumors of Ellen DeGeneres cheating on Portia date back to a February report when Ellen was spotted together with a mystery brunette having lunch in West Hollywood. "This photo op for the paparazzi was not an accident, but instead very purposeful. Ellen knew that she and her new friend would be photographed together and that Portia would see the snaps. She also knows better than to be seen with another woman alone, unless she wants people to talk. Obviously she felt close enough to this chick to want to be seen in public with her. She doesn’t mind if people are speculating on how they know each other and what exactly their relationship may be. Also, if something is actually brewing with this woman then Ellen’s walking with her shows her that she’s not hidden."

Of course, Ellen's alleged cheating activities continued while Portia was in rehab in May. Fans who are familiar with Ellen DeGeneres and Portia de Rossi know that something is amiss with the headlines that claim that Ellen is cheating on Portia, and that Ellen’s ultimate way of controlling Portia and her abuse of booze and pills was to send her into rehab. “Rehab was the only way that Ellen would even consider staying in the marriage.”

If Ellen wants to save her marriage, why would she cheat? As it turns out, the mystery brunette is one of Ellen's longtime close personal friends with whom she has been seen jogging several times. In regard to Ellen's alleged attempt to control Portia by sending her into rehab -- if life was only that easy.

When Ellen began dating Portia in 2004 and eventually married her on Aug. 16, 2008, at their Beverly Hills home, she was well aware that like many other partners, Portia came with her own life story.

Portia’s painful reality existed long before she ever met Ellen DeGeneres. In her 2011 groundbreaking book Unbearable Lightness: A Story of Loss and Gain, Portia describes that even as a 12-year-old model working in Australia she was “terrified that the truth of her sexuality would be exposed in the tabloids,” and that she tried to deal with the uncontrollable pain with a pain that she could control – starving herself and binge-eating.

“From her lowest point, Portia began the painful climb back to a life of health and honesty, falling in love and marrying Ellen DeGeneres and emerging as an outspoken and articulate advocate for gay rights and women’s health issues. In this remarkable and landmark book, she has given the world a story that inspires hope and nourishes the spirit.”

Portia de Rossi’s rehab visit in May is a clear indication that she needs to write a follow-up book because neither fame nor a marriage (even to Ellen DeGeneres) can heal a pain that initiated in childhood. As the latest news headlines about Robin Williams returning to rehab have shown, the only way to deal with that kind of pain is continuous support. If Portia has any kind of chance of continuing her personal growth, it appears that Ellen DeGeneres is the perfect partner to do it with.
