Port Townsend's Big Red Barn near Fort Worden makes for a cozy getaway

One of my favorite Pacific Northwest getaways is Port Townsend, and the Big Red Barn is probably the most unique and unusual place to stay. Yes, it really was a barn back in its day, built in the 1890s and renovated by current owners Todd and Carol Eskelin.

Over the years, the Big Red Barn has expanded. Today, the private and chic space with open beam ceilings includes two rooms: a private bedroom and sitting area with fireplace and a mini-kitchen complete with a queen-size sleeper sofa. It's perfect for two, or a small family. The spacious bathroom features a bath with rain-shower head and jetted tub for two. Pets are welcome for a small fee, and there's complimentary Wi-Fi, coffee/tea, and muffins for your first morning's breakfast.

Located across the street from Fort Worden State Park (where An Officer and a Gentleman was filmed), you can walk to the beach, go hiking or attend an event at Centrum's McCurdy Pavilion. Just outside the barn doors is a meditation pond, and beyond are views of the Cascades and Mt. Baker.

Take in a movie at The Rose Theatre; listen to live music at Sirens, Upstage Bistro, Uptown Pub; and visit the Northwest Maritime Center

Getting There: There are there are several ways to get to the Olympic Peninsula, depending on your point of departure. Find maps and directions at PTguide.com.
