One of the things Lake Erie is famous for is walleye so if you are a Clevelander who would like to celebrate the fish then head for the 34th annual Walleye Festival in Port Clinton, Ohio over Memorial Day weekend. One of Ohio's largest outdoor celebrations, the Walleye Festival is a family-friendy event with activities for all age groups. Port Clinton is approximately a one hour drive from Cleveland.
Port Clinton Walleye Festival Being held at Waterworks Park on Perry Street in Port Clinton (the "Walleye Capital of the World"), this free admission festival opens on Thursday, May 22 at 5 p.m. with carnival rides. An advance ticket purchase for $40 will allow you to ride all weekend. The Walleye Festival will also have a Walleye Beer Festival for adults.
Most activities at the Walleye Festival begin on Friday, May 23 at 5 p.m. and run through Monday, May 26.
There will be lots of free entertainment including performances by The Junk, Modern Bliss, the KingBees, Legends of Rock, Chris Shutters and Fifty Amp Fuse.
There will be a multitude of fun and educational children's activities (like face painting, special programs and crafts) at the Kids Activity Area. Be sure to take in a performance by magician Michael Mage.
The event's Grande Parade will take place on Saturday, May 24 at 1 p.m. starting at Port Clinton High School.
Another major event at the Walleye Festival is the Kids Fishing Derby at Derby Pond starting at noon on Sunday. There are three categories for the Derby. They are "Children Under 7," "Children 7-9" and "Children 10-12".
The Festival will also feature a Walleye 5K Run taking place on Sunday starting at 10 a.m.
There will be 130 vendors from around the country offering merchandise and lots of food and beverages for purchase including walleye and perch sandwiches.
Hours for the Port Clinton Walleye Festival are 5 p.m. - 11 p.m. on Thursday and Friday, 11 a.m. - 11 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday and 11 a.m. - 5 p.m. on Monday (Memorial Day). Admission is free. There is a fee for the amusement rides.
