Fred Lee Sheetz, 59, of Punta Gorda, Fla. was arrested in the parking lot of a shopping center on Tamiami Trail for picking up his three-and-a-half-month-old puppy by the scruff of the neck and beating the defenseless animal several times on the head reported Wednesday's newspress.com.

The 14-week-old English Pointer was seized by the Charlotte County Animal Control and did not appear injured.

When asked by authorities why he was beating the puppy, Sheetz told police, "That is how I train my dog and the dog needs to accept me."

Sheetz has been charged with first degree, misdemeanor animal cruelty. He was being held in lieu of $2,500 bond.
