Porsche crashes at 155 mph on Nurburgring

The Nurburgring is the most difficult of all racing tracks in the world. The Techart Porsche gracefully wrecks at 155 mph after falling victim to the infamous Porsche pendulum effect. Anyone that has ever driven one of these vehicles understands that a rear mounted engine is great for off line acceleration but can be deadly in corners. One wrong move, and the car is thrown off kilt and spins out. The heavy weight of the engine plus inertia from sliding out from the center traction point creates a spin that no drive can recover!

More Nurburgring fun!

Why does Porsche use this design if it is so hard to control? When you do it right, the Porsche can out corner most front mound engine chassis because the extra weight on the rear tires allows more corner torque manipulation. Drivers use torque to help steer the car through corners by "torque sliding" the rear end out a hair just so that it points the front end in the right direction. This technique dances of the edge of disaster and glory.

Both Len's daughter and son in law drive a Porsche. We are going to California to visit with them on Wednesday.

We have to hire a full size car because theirs only have 2 seats.
