The National Highway Transportation Safety Administration (NHTSA), in their weekly summary March 4, announced recalls of small quantities of four high end sports cars from Porsche and Lotus.
Porsche:
The Porsche recall is for certain 2012 and 2013 Porsche 911 Carrera and Porsche 911 Carrera 4 vehicles produced from March 7, 2012 to Nov. 12, 2012.
This recall covers both coupes and convertibles totaling 2,263 vehicles.
The defect is with the rear mufflers of the standard exhaust system where the tail pipe may crack and break away from the vehicle becoming a hazard on the roadway and possibly leading to an accident involving another vehicle.
It is important to note that this recall is for the standard exhaust system only. Not all of the vehicles produced in this period have the standard exhaust. Many are equipped with the optional sport exhaust system which is not included in this recall.
Porsche has not announced a recall schedule as yet citing the need to obtain a sufficient quantity of the reinforced rear muffler systems.
The possible break away of the tailpipe is projected to be limited to vehicles with higher mileage, according to Porsche, as all reports of such incidents to date have been in vehicles with more than 25,000 miles.
Porsche will notify owners of the recall as soon as the replacement mufflers are available.
The Porsche recall number is AD01.
Owners can call Porsche at 1-800-767-7243 if they have any questions.
Lotus:
Lotus has issued a recall for an additional 451 Lotus Elise and Lotus Exige models from years 2007 and 2008.
This is an expansion of an earlier recall that included 5,042 units of Lotus Elise vehicles from 2005, 2006, 2007 and 2008 along with Lotus Exige vehicles from 2006, 2007 and 2008.
The total of the two models being recalled is now 5,493.
The recall is for a defective oil cooler line hose end fitting that may separate from the cooler spraying oil on a tire which could lead to a crash or spraying oil throughout the engine compartment that may lead to a fire.
Lotus is notifying owners of the affected Lotus Elise and Lotus Exigue vehicles to bring their cars in for replacement of the oil line at no charge.
The Lotus recall number is 2013/01R.
Owners of possible impacted Lotus Elise and Lotus Exige from those model years can call Lotus at 1-800-245-6887 for more information.
