GT Spirit reported early today (Aug 22,2013) that a Porsche 911 Turbo was spotted on the freeways of France pulling what looked like a full size camper (or as they call it in Europe, a caravan). For the average American, towing with anything smaller than a full size truck can be quite an oddity, but in Europe it is common for people going on vacation to tow with adequately powered cars. Nevertheless, the choice to use a Porsche 911 Turbo isn't the first car a European would choose to use.
A quick search for tow rating capacities for 911 Porsche Turbo’s comes up null as there are no tow ratings available. In fact, Porsche doesn't recommend using a 911 as a tow vehicle at all. The only Porsche capable of any such feat is the Cayenne, with a tow rating a little above seven thousand pounds.
Make no mistake, with more than 450 lbs-ft of torque on tap above 1500 RPM, the turbocharged flat six is up to the task to pull its weight around and then some. It’s just that the purpose of a 911 turbo wasn’t meant for towing duties.
Hats off to the driver for having the proverbial cojones to hitch up his caravan to his sports car. By all accounts, we are led to believe that this might just be a lease. And apparently this owner's been doing it for years as a quick search on Youtube brought up a clip with the exact same Porsche and caravan as the photo.
