The porn industry does employ some sleazy marketing that makes seeing or interacting with porn models quite enticing. The porn industry employs their marketing to create no incentive to distinguish between child and adult traffic. Most pornography sites do not request age verification of their visitors and even offer free samples of pornographic images. More responsible sites ask to verify if the site visitor is 18 years or older but no real age verification exists to view sexually explicit material.

What harm is there for Children and Teens in viewing Porn?

Desensitization of the viewer and increases an appetite for more: deviant, bizarre, or violent types of pornography. Can lead to increased sexual indifference toward women and causes some to make trivial the act of rape as a criminal offense. Some other issues: Can cause: sexual aggression in some viewers and makes the lies and tales of porn the norm and not the exception.

Some Signs:

Increased pop-ups or inappropriate e-mails on your computer, Tablet or smart phone (Much the same as drugs or alcohol)

Noticeable changes in behavior including: increased secretiveness or defensiveness (Much the same as drugs and other related material)

An unusual curiosity about sexuality for the child’s age (6yr old suddenly needs to see or asks about acts and genitals)

What to do:

Keep the lines of communication open by listening to what your children or teens say and what they don’t say

Some questions to keep in your back pocket to ask if you want to know what’s up with your kids or teens:

Have you ever seen something online that made you uncomfortable or curious?

Have any of your friends ever accessed pornography? By accident (pop-up ads) or on purpose (click straight through to an adult site)

How did that happen? What did you do? How did it make you feel?
