Burlington is a gaming hotspot in Vermont. With 5 colleges all in close proximity the town is booming with youthful spirited players. Some of the most popular games you will find being played are Dungeons and Dragons, Warhammer, and Magic the Gathering. If you think that is all there is to the tabletop gaming scene here you are mistaking. You can find all types of card games like Yu-Gi-Oh!, Gamma World, and Dominion.
Magic the Gathering is alive and well in Burlington. Quarterstaff, a local gaming store, offers Friday Night Magic(FNM) for more serious players, Wednesday night Booster Drafts, and Casual Card Games on Monday evenings. FNM is a great experience with the format changing based on the Friday of the month it is! Booster Drafts are a great place to grab new cards while playing and having fun. Casual Card Games is a fun place for people of any game to hang out, discuss strategy and learn what is new. It is a great place for old players who haven’t been on the scene in awhile to get reacquainted with the game.
Yu-Gi-Oh! is not quite as popular as magic however it can also be found being played at Quarterstaff. Casual Card Games has some regular Yu-Gi-Oh! players. Saturday is tournament day and they do sneak peeks for the release of new packs.
Gamma World just released its 7th edition late 2010 and it has become quite popular. Heavily influenced by D&D, Gamma World throws the player into a post apocalyptic, science fiction, fantasy setting allowing players to take part in epic adventures with the ease of just following the cards. Like a TCG booster packs are available for purchase to increase your game play however the starting box has all you need to play including character sheets and 80 non-random cards. Along with Boosters you can purchase Expansion Kits.
Dominion, like Gamma World, has a different approach to the CCG game style. It has a basic box, expansions, and boosters. Each player starts with a small identical deck of cards, including Estate cards, currency cards. Available to all players are stacks of different cards that you “purchase” with your currency cards. The players build their deck until one stack of cards is out. You then count up how many estates each player has to find out who won. The game has many different strategies and is even playable with alternate win conditions.
Head to Quarterstaff or the tabletop gaming club of your college and you are bound to find people willing to play any of these games.
