The pope has one lung. Pope Francis I has many interesting qualities but many people were surprised to learn that he only has one lung. Jorge Mario Bergoglio had an infection when he was a teenager, this according to a March 14 report by the New York Daily News. People have been most surprised by this information, but according to people close to him, he's doing okay. After all, he has been living with one lung for decades.
"Doctors said that losing one lung doesn't necessarily compromise the pope's health or reduce his life span, though it means no strenuous exercise since he no longer has as much air capacity as people with two lungs," the New York Daily News reported.
The pope's one lung doesn't change people's newly formed opinions of him much. Other than many saying "that's amazing" and wondering what exactly caused Pope Francis to have his lung removed. Nowadays, that would be rare. Medicine has come a long way since the time when Jorge Mario Bergoglio was growing up.
Other facts about Pope Francis I include the fact that he is one of five siblings. He also has a degree in chemistry. His one lung is only part of who he really is. As previously reported, he is said to be a humble man who cares for the sick and feels for the poor.
One lung makes the pope unable to run marathons and he does run a little slower than someone with two functioning lungs. Of course he has to be very careful when it comes to getting sick, but he has made it this far and he seems to be doing fine.
