Pope John Paul II blood stolen: Rare vial has unknown street value

The Pope John Paul II blood stolen over the weekend has an unknown street value, but that didn't stop a thief from specifically targeting the small vial. The pontiff died on April 2, 2005 in Vatican City. His cause of death was septic shock and irreversible cardio circulatory collapse.

The holy blood was taken from the Church of San Pietro della Ienca in central Italy on Sat., Jan. 25 2014. The vial is one of only three samples of Pope John Paul II blood known to exist in the world, according to New York Daily News.

The robber who stole the Pope John Paul II blood has interesting timing. The pontiff is set to become a saint in April 2014. There is no way of knowing whether that upcoming event had anything to do with the theft or whether the canonization of Pope John Paul II will increase the vial of blood's street value.

The vial of Pope John Paul II blood had been securely displayed behind a glass case in the central Italian church. It was the only object removed from the church during the theft. A custodian at the church realized that the relic was missing after finding shattered glass from a broken window and immediately called the police.
