Does the newly-installed Pope Francis have a naughty streak? On March 20, People reported that the new leader of the Catholic Church – who was previously named Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio – was a bit of a wild child back in his elementary school days.
Sister Martha Rabino, the head of the Pope Francis’s childhood Buenos Aires school, said, "As a boy, he was a little naughty. Sister Rose had been his teacher and died at age 101. He was very fond of her. He would always visit her … he would love to ask her, 'What was I like as a little boy?' And she would always say, 'You were a devil!' and he would laugh and laugh."
These days the 76-year old is a humble Pontiff. According to The Guardian, he told Argentineans not to travel to Rome to celebrate if he was appointed, but to give their money to the poor instead.
He also has a sense of humor. ABC News reported that a dinner with the cardinal electors last week, the new Pope joked during a toast: “May God forgive you for what you have done.”
According to the New York Times, at his Inauguration Mass on Tuesday, Pope Francis vowed to serve “the poorest, the weakest, the least important,” and he had a special request for world leaders.
“I would like to ask all those who have positions of responsibility in economic, political and social life, and all men and women of good will: let us be protectors of creation, protectors of God’s plan inscribed in nature, protectors of one another and of the environment,” he said.
