In an interview with American Magazine, Pope Francis said, “We cannot insist only on issues related to abortion, gay marriage and the use of contraceptive methods. This is not possible." The implications of the Pope's words are enormous. Conservative Catholics and Christians have consistently used both gay marriage and abortion as rallying cries to get out the conservative vote during elections. These groups have also used the issue of contraception as a reason for opposing the Affordable Healthcare Act, more commonly referred to as ObamaCare.
While the Pope is not changing Church teaching or doctrine, he is saying that there are other issues which need attention. As an advocate of the poor, certainly social justice issues are important to the Pope and should be important to Catholics, especially Bishops. With SNAP coming under attack from the Republicans, the Bishops would do well do spend more time fighting for SNAP, than fighting against gay marriage, abortion and contraception.
