The couples receiving the Pope’s message on Valentine's Day are dedicated to completing their marriage preparations and will be married by the year’s end. Today’s Catholic News reported that couples attending the event “received a small white pillow with Pope Fancis’ signature and his papal crest; the cushion has two satin ribbons for securing weeding rings during the marriage ceremony." An Italian woman said that her inspiration comes from friends that have been married for many years; the expression they have when they look at each other tells it all.

Although Pope Francis had a prepared speech and notes, it did not stop him from giving examples. He said that since the time of Adam, human nature has been to place blame on someone else. Instead, he emphasized that asking forgiveness and not placing blame on the spouse go a long way in creating beautiful marriage. Otherwise bad feelings and resentment build that can destroy the marriage.

“Living together is an art, a patient, beautiful and amazing journey [that] doesn’t end when you’ve won over each others’ hearts,” said Pope Francis.” Instead, Pope Francis indicated that this is when the journey begins. Mutual respect and being able to say ‘thank you’ and ‘I’m sorry’ promote a healthy family life.
