Pope Francis, the newly elected pope, is starting his papacy with a long list of firsts. According to a March 14 report by Fox News, Pope Francis is the first and only pope to have only has one lung.

Pope Frances, the new pope, had one of his lungs removed as when he was a teenager. This was due to an infection. At the time of publication, the exact nature of the infection was unknown.

In addition to only having one lung, Pope Francis is the first pope to take the name Francis. In the history of the Catholic Church, no other pope has had the name Francis. Catholics are thrilled with his name choice. St. Francis is one of the most beloved of all saints.

Not only is Pope Francis the first pope with only one lung and to take the name Francis, Pope Francis is the first pope from South America. Pope Francis is from Argentina. He is the son off Italian immigrants.

Despite all the firsts for Pope Francis, he is not the first pope to be elected during a time of turmoil for the Catholic Church. Pope Francis has inherited several issues that he will need to help solve. Those issues include the sexual abuse taking place within the Catholic Church as well as abortion, same-sex marriage and the issues in the Middle East.
