During his Angelus on Sunday, Pope Francis dedicated Saturday, September 7 as a day of global prayer for peace in Syria, the Middle East and the entire world according to Vatican News. The Pontiff extended the peaceful invitation to Catholics, non-Catholic Christians and followers of all religions to participate in the worldwide day of prayer, however the deem appropriate.
Speaking to the masses gathered in St. Peter’s Square on Sunday, Pope Francis addressed the crisis in Syria. He condemned the use of chemical weapons and declared September 7 as a day for all faithful to join in prayer for peace in Syria. The Holy Father chose the date specifically to coordinate with the vigil of the birth of Mary, the Queen of Peace, and Pope Francis has also requested Catholics to fast during this time.
I have decided to proclaim for the whole Church on 7 September next, the vigil of the birth of Mary, Queen of Peace, a day of fasting and prayer for peace in Syria, the Middle East, and throughout the world, and I also invite each person, including our fellow Christians, followers of other religions and all men of good will, to participate, in whatever way they can, in this initiative. On 7 September, in Saint Peter’s Square, here, from 7 p.m. until midnight, we will gather in prayer and in a spirit of penance, invoking God’s great gift of peace upon the beloved nation of Syria and upon each situation of conflict and violence around the world. Humanity needs to see these gestures of peace and to hear words of hope and peace! I ask all the local churches, in addition to fasting, that they gather to pray for this intention.
The Diocese of Rockville Centre has yet to respond to the Pope’s request for Catholics to pray and fast for peace in Syria. (The full text of Pope Francis’ appeal for peace can be read here.) However, this was a holiday weekend and individual church bulletins have not been distributed for September 7. Check with your local parish if times have been set aside for your church to pray for peace in Syria.
