In light of the canonization ceremony scheduled for this Sunday, the Vatican has released two free Saint apps on Friday, one for Blessed John Paul II and the other for Blessed John XXII, according to Vatican Radio.

In September Pope Francis scheduled the much-anticipated canonization ceremony of John Paul II and John XXIII for this approaching Sunday. Pope Francis had set aside September 30 in August as the date he would hold the Public Ordinary Consistory for the impending canonization of Pope John Paul II and Pope John XXIII. Many had previously speculated the canonization ceremony to occur in 2013, however due to the Pontiff’s extraordinarily busy year, John Paul II and John XXIII would be sainted at the same time on April 27, 2014, the second Sunday of Easter and Divine Mercy Sunday, established in 2000 by Pope John Paul II.

Blessed Pope John XXIII reigned as Pontiff from October 28, 1958 until his death on June 3, 1963. He was beatified by Pope John Paul II on September 3 of 2000 and is affectionately known as “Good Pope John.” The official Vatican application for Pope John XXIII is “dedicated to one of the most important and most beloved popes in the history of the Church, Angelo Giuseppe Roncalli,” according to the details of John XXIII's app.

Blessed Pope John Paul II ruled the Catholic Church from October 16, 1978 until his death on April 2, 2005. Referred to as, “John Paul the Great,” Pope John Paul II was beatified on May 1, 2011 by Pope Benedict XVI, now Pope Emeritus. The official Vatican application for Pope John Paul II is also “dedicated to one of the most important and most beloved popes in the history of the Church, Karol Józef Wojtyła,” again, according to the details of John Paul II's app.

Both Saint apps are an effort from the Catholic Church to share in the historic occasion with information available that is dedicated to the candidates. Users can read biographical information and other publications, become familiar with the canonization process and the good works of both men, learn all of the event information for April 27, read prayers dedicated to the newly sainted, and find tourism information for those visiting Vatican City to witness history.

The apps are available in English, Italian, Chinese, Spanish, Portuguese and French. To download the free Saint apps for android and IOS devices, click this link, which will redirect you to the page entitled, “Canonization John Paul II John XXIII.”
