Pope affirms that human life is sacred and should be protected from conception

In what may be his strongest remarks on abortion to date, Pope Francis decried the taking of unborn life during a meeting with members of the pro-life movement in Italy, thanking them for their staunch defense of human life and dignity from conception until natural death. Although the meeting took place in March, the text of the Pontiff’s remarks was released for public consumption Saturday. “Human life is sacred and inviolable. Every civil law is based on the recognition of the first and fundamental right, that of life, which is not subordinate to any condition, neither qualitative nor economic, much less ideological,” the Pope said. “Thank you for your witness of promoting and defending human life from the moment of conception!,” he exclaimed.

The Holy Father warned against the participation of modern culture in what he called an “economy of exclusion” where economic policy and morality are compartmentalized and rendered as two separate and distinct spheres. “The divorce between economics and morality is one of the most grave risks facing our age,” the Holy Father remarked.

“It is therefore necessary to reiterate the strongest opposition to any direct attack on life, especially innocent and defenseless life, and the unborn child in the womb is the archetype of innocence,” the Pontiff reminded the coalition of local Italian pro-life groups.
