Pop Up Picnic turns attention to the slow food movement

Pop Up Picnic Denver
Pop Up Picnic

It is almost impossible to rush a picnic in the park. Food is carefully prepared and packed, blankets smoothed out over grass, under trees, looking out over the parks. Your lunch is consumed slowly, in good company, and at the end you leave nothing behind - as if you were never there - so a future pic-nicker can enjoy their own experience.

The idea of slow enjoyment of food is the idea behind Pop-Up Picnics. With our lives becoming more and more busy with each passing year, it is difficult to forget the importance of what we eat. Between nutrition, preparation, planning, and downright enjoyment of food - there is a lot to think about. A picnic is the perfect way to go from thinking “I am hungry, I must eat now” to “What do I want to enjoy today?”

Coordinated by Healthy Realities, Grow Local Colorado, and Slow Food Denver; participants of Pop Up Picnics are asked to think creatively about preparing a picnic and how they would share it with everyone. Anyone can create a picnic event anywhere in the city - from neighborhood parks to benches in the middle of the city - on September 16th and 11:30 AM and are encouraged to shoot a small video to describe their experience. In the video, picnickers are asked to answer a few questions, including:

What are you eating?
Who is attending your picnic
Where are you having your picnic?
Why do you love Pop Up Picnic?
