Pool Garden (Photos)

How to make THREE raised bed gardens from start to finish in under thirty minutes.

Supplies:

  • Kiddie Pools -three 60 inch pools which are roughly 12 inches deep
  • Drill with 1/2 inch or 1 inch bit
  • Bottom material: Mulch, peat moss, or hay ( whichever is least expensive and easiest for you to find. Pine mulch is about two dollars a bag at Walmart). Your roots will do better if you have one of the three because they absorb moisture and your roots tend to gravitate towards them whereas they just don’t go as deep with rocks.
  • Good gardening soil. Gardening Soil - two forty pounds bags for each pool.
  • Little extra fertilizer (optional). Compost or well-rotted manure; just stirred about a fourth of a bag into each pool garden.
  • Top soil – As an additional filler (saves money); two bags
  • Mulch – One bag per pool. You need this to help keep weeds down and helps prevent splashing during a hard rain.

Begin by drilling holes, about two inches from the bottom, around the sides of your pool at about 12 to 18 inch intervals (use one inch bit). Put an inch or two of mulch (or hay or peat moss) in the bottom of your pool. Top that off with your gardening soil - cut 40 pound bag of dirt open with a shovel and shovel it into the pool until the bag was light enough to easily lift. Then pour the rest of the dirt in. Then I put about 1/4 of a bag of compost into the pool. Add about twenty pounds of topsoil. Then put plants in according to the directions on each one. Add mulch.

These easy gardens are so nice because they are such a breeze to manage size.
