Pontius Pilate's question still worth examining today

Matthew records the events as Jesus is brought before Pontius Pilate, the Roman governor over Judea. After the crowd asked for the release of Barnabas, Pilate asked, "What shall I do then with Jesus which is called Christ?" It is perhaps, the central question of the Bible.

The Bible tells us for God so loved the word, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life. Jesus saith unto him, "I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me." Paul wrote to the Romans, "That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation. For the scripture saith, Whosoever believeth on him shall not be ashamed ... For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved ... For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast."

The Bible doesn't say those that did good things shall be saved. It doesn't say that those who have done more good than evil shall be saved. It doesn't even say those that attend church, have Christian parents, or live in the Unite States shall be saved. It says you have to make a decision about Jesus. You have to believe He paid the price for your sins and you have to ask Him to save you.

There is yet more to the question of "What shall I do then with Jesus which is called Christ?" The question is valid every day of your life. Do you live by His principles or not? Do you forgive? Do you give? Do you pray for those who have hurt you? Do you value the things of heaven more than the things of earth? Do you study the Bible to learn His thoughts? Do you pray to get His guidance?

What do you do when you get your feelings hurt at church? Do you drop out and quit following the Lord because someone said or did something that you didn't like? Do you quit laying up for your self treasures in heaven? Do you quit doing good works?

If you quit church, how will your family ever hear the message that Jesus loves them, that He died for their sins, and that they can be saved if they call upon the name of the Lord? Don't you want the best for your spouse and your children? What would it be like to live in heaven, but know that your children are headed to hell because you dropped out of church, you ridiculed Christians, and your children, following your example, never set foot in a church, never heard a Christian speak of the love of God, never got saved? Can you see why Jesus said to forgive?

What shall you do then with Jesus which is called Christ today?
